From 11 to 13 November, HI attended the Paris Peace Forum to call for States to join the political process against the use of explosive weapons in populated areas.
The Paris Peace Forum brought together for three days many actors of governance: Heads of State and Government, local and national representatives, regional and international organizations, civil society (companies, associations, NGOs,…). It is intended to become the annual global gathering of projects, ideas and initiatives around five themes: Peace and security, Environment, Development, New technologies, Inclusive Economy.
Those 3 days were the opportunity to meet with State delegations, politicians, NGOs to sensitize them on the bombing of populated areas and its disastrous impact on civilians. On Tuesday, HI organised a round table on the humanitarian impact of the use of explosive weapons in populated areas. About fifteen people, including deputies and the ambassador of Mozambique in France (a country strongly involved in the cause), discussed the subject and the political solutions to be found. For the occasion, the French daily newspaper La Croix provided behind-the-scenes coverage of HI’s advocacy actions at the Forum.
Strong support from Members of national parliaments
Earlier this year, HI called on 4,500 MPs from Belgium, Canada, France, Germany, Luxembourg, Switzerland, the United Kingdom, the United States, to help ensure their respective countries’ commit to stopping the bombing of civilians. Many MPs have expressed their support for our campaign in France, the United Kingdom, Switzerland, Luxembourg and other countries. In France, 90 MPs signed an appeal against the bombing of civilians. Before the Paris Peace Forum, on Wednesday 7 November, 27 of them gathered in front of the National Assembly with portraits of bombing victims. They called on the French Government to take a clear stand against the bombing of populated areas and to join the political process against the use of explosive weapons in populated areas:
[#StopBombing] Merci à tous les députés?? qui ont rendu hommage aujourd’hui aux victimes des bombardements et des armes explosives devant l'Assemblée nationale.
Chaque jour, 90 civils sont victimes d'armes explosives dans le monde !
