From 5 to 7 September 2016, the Meeting of State parties to the Convention on Cluster Munitions will be held in Geneva.

Handicap International will launch the booklet “Victim Assistance in the context of the use of explosive weapons in populated areas: Recommendations for a future political commitment”, at side event .

As the process to develop a political declaration on prevention of civilian harm from the use of explosive weapons is successfully moving forwards, civil society, national and international organizations continue working alongside governments to ensure the declaration will be comprehensive and effectively respond to the expectations of those who have suffered from the consequences of the use of explosive weapons around the world.
With the aim of contributing to the Political Declaration process, Irish Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade and Handicap International launched an initiative with civil society and international organizations along with survivors to develop a common understanding on the needs and the rights of victims of explosive weapons. They developed recommendations regarding victim assistance provisions in the future political declaration, which will be presented during a side event, on the 5th.

The speakers of the side-event will include:
– Anne Hery, Head of Advocacy Unit and Institutional Relations, Handicap International
– Jackie O’Halloran, Deputy Director, Disarmament & Non-Proliferation, Government of Ireland
– Col. Jim Burke, Military Advisor, Government of Ireland
– Yazan Karcout, Mine Risk Education Manager, Handicap International
