Handicap International is launching a campaign to demand all actors to protect civilians in conflicts and to stop the use of explosive weapons in populated area.

Every year, tens of thousands of civilians are killed and injured by the use of explosive weapons in populated areas. Explosive weapons include mortars, rockets, missiles, artillery shells, and air-dropped bombs. They also include landmines and cluster munitions, both of which are banned by international treaties.

This pattern of violence cause suffering and serious injuries, it is also the cause of severe impairment and psychological trauma. Explosive weapons in populated areas destroy homes, schools , hospitals… After the conflict, those weapons that did not detonate on impact are not only a danger to people’s safety but also an obstacle to the country’s reconstruction.

Handicap International Belgium realised the short movie below to raise awareness among the public on the use of explosive weapons .

Using explosive weapons in populated areas is against International Law! Urgent action is needed to protect civilians. Handicap International calls on States to :

  • Publicly condemn the use of explosive weapons in populated areas,
  • Commit to ending the use of explosive weapons in populated areas and indicate support for all international processes aiming to this effect,
  • Contribute funds towards assisting the victims, clearing weapons in affected zones, and preventing further injuries and deaths.
